Rattle Magazine: Spotlight Market

I’m excited to try out a new feature on WritersDigest.com on Thursdays in which I’ll be spotlighting a different market for writers, whether it’s a book publisher, magazine, website, contest, or something else entirely. Since it’s National Poetry Month, I’ve decided to start with one of my favorite poetry publications: Rattle magazine.

Rattle Magazine: Spotlight Market

Rattle is a poetry publication based in Studio City, California, that publishes a wide range of poetry. As they say in their Poet’s Market listing, “We’re looking for poems that move us, that might make us laugh or cry, or teach us something new.”

What They’re Looking For: “At Rattle, anything goes. If a poem is accessible, interesting, moving, and memorable, if it makes you laugh or cry, then it’s the kind of poem that rattles around inside you for years, and it’s our kind of poem.”

How to Submit: Rattle‘s guidelines are online here and should always be checked for changes before submitting. That said, they accept poems year-round via Submittable. The editors encourage simultaneous submissions but not previously published poems. Contributors receive $100/poem if included in the print magazine and $50/poem if published online.

Extra Info: In addition to the magazine, the Rattle website publishes one (or two) Poets Respond poems per week that respond to a current event that happened during the same week. And they offer a monthly ekphrastic challenge. Plus, Rattle offers a few annual contests and publishes a young poets anthology.
